A taste of the best - Rated
I wanted a taste of other writers of the Warhammer 40K world and was interested in Ben Counter's contribution. I was pleasantly surprised to be so engrossed in this story as I was with my favourite author's novels, Dan Abnett. After reading it, I craved for more of his books.
A must buy, especially if you like the Grey Knights. A satisfying read all the way through.
Bloody Fantastic - Rated
I have read several 40K books (I find the whole ethos quite intriguing) and this is one of the best I have read so far.
The plot is excellent and very involved, the action is as per other 40K books very bloody and quite grim, but at the same time is realistic, in war people die pure and simples.
But what sets this apart is the Grey Knights themselves and the Ordos Malleus who they work with. Things are grim, very grim indeed the Grey Knights are outnumbered, resources are few and far between, the enemy is extremely clever, deadly and ruthless in the extreme and they are running out of time. OK nothing new I hear some say the Space Marines are alwasy outnumbered, but on this occasion it is very relevant the odds really are against them and it is how the Grey Knights face this that grabs you and keeps you reading.
The leader of the Grey Knights in this story is Alaric a junior officer and this is one of the few times where we we get to see the marines exercise their grey matter and not just their trigger fingers and Alaric's growth as a leader as a result is one the main themes of the story (I personally hope we see more of him), his bond with his men grows as a result.
You also see some of the worst and the best that man in the 4OK universe has to offer. The sacrifice that the Grey Knights and the Ordos Malleus make to preserve the safety of humanity is quite humbling, but at the same time man's own inhumanity to himself in order to maintain the protection of same humanity is quite horrific.
A very good read
Incredible - Rated
I don't play the game myself but find the mythos of Warhammer 40,000 incredibly deep and engrossing. This was the first novel I read based in that universe, and Ben Counter has got the feeling and the details spot on. You are left in no doubt that the Grey Knights he portrays are pure and true Space Marines, utterly blind in their faith, but out of necessity in the face of a galaxy filled to the brim with the threat of Man's extinction. The action sequences are gripping and of incredible intensity, and it all seems very plausible (noting of course that this is the 41st millenium of a Chaos-infested universe, and that the Grey Knights are elite amongst superhumans). The non-action parts are drenched in 40K atmosphere, even Ben Counter's description of some dusty old archives makes for intense reading. It really works excellently at firing your imagination. The only real problem I have with this book is that the prologue was the best part - though the whole thing is fantastic, the prologue for me remains a cut above the rest in its mind-blowing imagery. I highly recommended this book to anyone with an interest in the 40K universe, it does it great justice.
Wow just when i thought it couldn't get better!! - Rated
Im a big fan of the warhammer 40k board game and thought of the grey knights as my favorite model/unit. Never did i think that someone would do justice to their mystery and steadfastness. Yet Ben Counter has done so i have only read this once but im certainly looking forward to repeat reads. A twisting plot from start to finish a must read for Grey Knight fans!!!!!!!!
The inquisition is here - Rated
Straight to the point: The major advantage of this book isthe Grey knights chapter itself. Rarely visited, rarely mentioned...Thw writer takes advantage of this and provides a few hints regarding its past. nice touch... The story is good, with a logical flow and some welcomed intrigue. I could also say that the writer managed to find the balance between mindless butchering and storytelling. The action is more than satisfying with good variance in locations that fit in completly with the story... So why only 4 stars? 1 star down because of the lack of imagination when it comes to the enemies...The description focuses too much on the knights and leaves us with the generic notion of "bad huys" (i consider abnett's novel to be great in this area...). Overall i would recommend this book to all warhammer fans irrespectively of thwther they are after death or intrigue!
