...The bullets found a target in one Meserschmitt then Connor turned his guns on another Nazi.. - Rated
A superb collection of some marvellous stories from the pages of the legendary Commando comic books.
This is a whopper of a book, with some fantastic stories which will be a real nostalgia trip for those who were nippers in the '70's & '80's.
Stories with titles like "Fight Or Die", "Guns On The Peaks" & "Flak Fever", take you on a journey into a less "pc" world, where Jerry & Jap were mercilless enemies but were no match for the combined might of the British armed forces - it's just a really enjoyable reminder of what seemed to be a simpler time & the stories are just great.
A real treat.
"Aaaaiiiiieeee!" - Rated
Jam-packed with cheesy lines, square-jawed heroes, rip-roaring explosions, zipping bullets and good old-fashioned cold steel. A generation of schoolboys have grown up believing the Germans and Japanese of WW2 were simply cruel goons who, although possessed of low animal cunning, showed themselves as utterly inferior to the average British Tommy, largely by running madly towards their carefully prepared gun positions. Out of ammo? No problem, the average Hun or Jap can be instantly dispatched with a neat right hook to the jaw. What more can you expect from opponents who yell out such bizarre expressions whilst being terrified by the sudden appearance of a Hurricane/Matilda/Bren Gun Carrier spitting lead death. "Aaaiiieee, Spitfire!!" "Achtung! Britisher Sweinhundt!"
The action is interspaced with fact files about weapons and equipment that most of us were then able to repeat verbatim during our toy-soldier battles. You never know when you'll need to know that the Bristol Beaufighter had six .303 wing-mounted machine guns (four starboard, two port) and four nose-mounted 20mm cannon!
If you're buying for Christmas, for goodness sake get two, because there is no way you will be able to leave yourself without at least one of the copies! "Take that Fritz!"

Being 25% bigger is good - and not just because my eye-sight is going. If I have one wish it would be for them to have made it as ten individual books in a slipcase so they are easier to read in the bath - this gives me arm ache!

When I was about [...], my family and I hired a south coast beach hut for two weeks of my summer holidays. At the back of the hut, on a shelf, was my rainy day entertainment, About two dozen commando comics. I'm approaching 30 now but can still remember whole passages of dialogue and can visualise the fantastic air battles from those little paper books. Reproduced even bigger than the old comics, this book picks out some superb editions, and not just ones about spitfires and prison breaks but stories set in Burma, India and more unfashionable vehicles like the Bristol Beaufighter. I still return to this and its sister book whenever I feel that nostalgic yearning. I think I'll take it on my summer holidays again this year and start back at the begining.
Both me and my kid (age 9) love this stuff - Rated
At last a book we can both enjoy. For me it's a nostalgia trip for him it's stories of what the Brits did in WW2 (and he thought it was the Americans who won WW2 single handed based on the TV movies he's seen!). Great stuff for kids of all ages.
