Batman: Arkham Asylum Anniversary Edition - Rated
Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of the best batman stories and to top it off it has astonishing writing and breath taking art. Its certainly has Grant Morrison feel to it. This book isn't meant for first readers of batman but instead for hard-core. It is a psychological horror story involving virtually all the Arkham Asylum inmates like two-face, the Mad Hatter, Killer Croc and of course led by the joker him self. They take over Arkham by seizing control of the staff and are only willing to release the hostages if Batman is turned over to them. For some people art style of the book might take something away but for more comic sassy people this is a treat. This is a must buy for every hard-core batman fan.
Shame I was hoping for better - Rated
Great Art but poor story. I had high hopes for this book after reading some of the rave reviews, I felt the dialogue was weak, as was Batman's character, and it let down the fantastic art.
Beautifull artwork and soty - Rated
Batman: Arkham Asylum is a work of art, literally, each page is crafted like a painted and I wouldn't be embarrassed to have any of them as a painting in my apartment. The story is equally good, giving a glimpse inside the minds of arkham asylum as well as that of the dark knight.
The only possible downside is that this doesn't quite seem like your typical batman story, the action is few in between and the detective work is bar some few hints, completely void from this story. However, if you love batman and the many villains of gotham and aren't afraid to try something perhaps a bit more artsy then usual, then this is a perfect buy and I would heartily recommend this to anyone.
Art-ham asylum - Rated
I absolutely love this book. I know that makes me bias, and some might say hypocritical at the average rating i have given it.
Ill start with why i love this book. The first thing you notice when you open the book is the high quality feel of the glossy paper, with a few splash pages of, well, clearly insanity inspired modern art. Once the story begins the art styles chop and change throughout, and it just suits my personal vision of what i love about graphic novels compared to prose. For the price of this book you couldnt buy a book on modern art that was as good.
The story, although not the most conventional, is fairly straight forward. In truth it follows two stories, batmans, and amadeus arkhams. I would say the latter is the more interesting of the two.
The downside is because it swaps every few pages the story loses its pace a little. The other thing is that because it is fairly short it will be over in about an hour.
For graphic novel fans, the second half of the book has the full annotated script, original storyboards layouts, and some more art pages. While this is appreciated, as somewhat custom in graphic novels nowadays to put some scripts in the back, i cant help feeling that 90% of the people who buy the books will not make more than a cursory glance at these pages.
My other complaint is that the joker, being the main arch-nemesis, has his captions done so it is a struggle to make out some of the words in one go. I feel that although it adds to the arty thing by giving all the major players special captions, it slows down the action when you have to re-read things.
Overall i think this is a good book. I enjoyed the subject matter, although i can see why it would not be to some peoples tastes. I would say, if you liked the killing joke, there is a good chance you will like this too.
Insanity just reading it - Rated
Before I start, do not buy this if you think you will be getting your run of the mill graphic novel, this is something special. I picked this up being a fan of clowns and of the joker in particular, I always know Grant (Morrison) will be writing a good story, so when I had the pictures to by as well, it was amazing. I recommend this if you want something different, something that makes you feel like you are in Arkham reading it, the drawings are so dark, so amazing, and the story just makes it more of a twisted tale.
