Fantasic sequal to the superb 'Dawn of Empire' - Rated
Having read Sam Barone's superb 'Dawn of Empire' I couldn't wait to lay my hands on the sequal 'Empire Rising.
Once again, Sam Barone brings ancient times vividly to life, this time focusing on Eskkar & Trella's struggle to build a fledgling empire and fight unseen enemies from within Orak. The characters were truly believable and the story fast paced and exciting.
Again, as with the intial book in the series I found myself captivated from page one and the story was so well written as to immerse the reader fully into those brutal times creating a whirlwind of emotions. I often put the book down breathless, but totally captivated.
As an avid reader of historical fiction ( Conn Iggulden, Bernard Cornwell, Simon Scarrow etc.)I rate Sam Barone up there with the very best !
If you love historical fiction then buy this book...you will not be disapointed !
And the great news ? Sam Barone is currently working on the third book in the series that should be out in 2009...I, amongst many of his fans cannot wait !

Empire Rising is the followup to Sam Barone's first book, Dawn of Empire. Carrying on Eskkar and Trella's story, it deals with the aftermath of a brutal attack and what comes next for the prosperous city they find themselves in.
It's a fantastic read and weaves together the stories of a huge range of characters with real ease, both through peacetime and combat. Having discovered these books completely by accident, I am now an avid fan of Barone and am holding on for his next installment! Amazon will sell you both books for less than £14 - a must purchase!
Excellent ancient history fiction - Rated
First off this is not meant to be a historical reference book. Yes there is license on some of the historical details but as a story this one rips along. The fact that it is set in a period of huge change and development in human history allows the author to take some liberties and he uses these well to keep the story flowing. Set in an era which seems to be rarely used by most historical fiction writers the main personalities have depth and continue to develop within the parameters of their characters; the plot is fast paced and maintains the interest. I'm very much looking forward to the future books of the series

I picked this book up at the airport, always a sucker for a rampaging all action set in the past read and this didn't disapoint. Of course the hero is the meanest sword swinger in Asia Minor but just lay back and enjoy the read.
Great easy read - Rated
Like his first novel Sam Barone has the knack of writing a fast moving novel with plenty of action and sufficient character development that you care about the outcome,as a previous reviewer mention Mr Barones publishers have put a stop on the third book in the series which was to be a prequell,he is currently working on other projects.
