A Look Back At Television History - Rated
I rather enjoyed this look back at one of the heroes of the 1950s, Quatermass who on a number of occasions saved the world from Alien Invasions. These classic television series are of course available on DVD, although only two episodes of The Quatermass Experiment (broadcast in 1953) survived. The Radio Programme broadcast in 1996 is a look back with fond memories by Nigel Kneale himself, with Andrew Keir (who played Quatermass in the Hammer Film Version made in 1967)providing the voice of the Professor who tells the various stories behind the legend. Various clips from the original series can be heard throughout, enhanced by the music of Gustav Holst (Mars, God of War from The Planets Suite). For some reason though, none of the original music used during Quatermass and The Pit (some of which still sounds quite eerie even today) can be heard which is a shame. Still, I am sure many oldies who watched the original transmissions during the 1950s will enjoy this double CD and bring back some haunting memories. Yes, I am sure many of them dived behind the sofa, even then! Good sound by the way. A very good buy.
About time too!! - Rated
This excellent BBC Radio 3 serial from 1996, has become a real cult favourite. A combination of newsreel footage, narration by writer Nigel Kneale and best of all - snippets from the BBC TV broadcasts of the first 3 Quatermass serials ('The Quatermass Experiment', 'Quatermass II' and 'Quatermass and the Pit'). The story begins with the ageing Professor Quatermass writing his memoirs in his remote Scottish home, when he is interrupted in doing so by a would be biographer Mandy....So the story begins with Quatermass backtracking over events, the newsreel footage and Mr Kneale's commentary are blended into the story.
Andrew Keir plays Quatermass with solid conviction (Much as his appearence in the Hammer Film version of 'Quatermass and the Pit', playing the same role). The actress playing Mandy is very unconvincing however and comes across like a 1950s BBC Newsreader - and is rather a pointless character to the story, and is probably used as some kind of lever for Quatermass to offload his story. This release is a great companion piece for last years brilliant DVD release of 'The Quatermass Collection'.
'The Quatermass Memoirs' although never tackles an 'Alien Invasion' head on, it does however provide a bridge between 'Quatermass and the Pit' and the final serial - 'Quatermass', which starred John Mills as the much older scientist in 1979.
This story is a worthy addition to any fan of the original serials, and a worthwhile insight into the saga for any newcomers to the world of 'Quatermass' - excellent stuff.
