On the face of it, Rebecca Bloomwood has it all. Confident, single and happily living in des-res Fulham with her best friend Suze, she's a financial journalist who spends her days writing articles advising other people on the importance of budgeting and prudent investing. Her private life is a different story though; Rebecca manages her own finances in a way that would make most of her readers' hair curl--for Rebecca is a woman on a mission--she just can't stop spending. I look up and I'm in front of Octagon. My favourite shop in the whole world. Three floors of clothes, accessories, furnishing, gifts, coffee shops, juice bars and a florist which makes you want to fill your entire home with flowers. I've got my purse with me. Just something small, to cheer me up. A T-shirt or something. Or even some bubble bath. I won't spend much. I'll just go in and... I'm already pushing my way through the doors. Oh God, the relief. The warmth, the light. This is where I belong. This is my natural habitat. As the plot unfolds, Rebecca finds increasingly bizarre and often highly comical ways to ignore her ever-growing debts and mounting pile of unpaid Visa bills and red bank statements. Got a bill you can't pay? No problem. Just take it out for a walk and deposit it in the nearest skip whilst no-one is looking. Need to justify that £120 velvet scarf? Don't worry! It was a snip at half price in the sale, so what initially looks like a splurge is actually an example of canny discount shopping. Rebecca's disastrous love life mirrors her finances. And her career seems to be taking a turn for the worse, too. That is, until she finds a financial story that really sparks her journalistic interest, and begins to spar with handsome and successful financial PR millionaire Luke Brandon. Humorous and insightful - a light read with some serious undertones - Rated I love Sophie Kinsella's sense of humour and her characterisation is insightful. Plot-wise, this book introduces Rebecca Bloomwood, who is a financial journalist, but who is hopeless staying in control of her own finances. She can't resist shopping and buys herself into trouble. It's very funny, but there are serious parts when Becky realises how big her debt is getting, and when she thinks other people aren't treating her with respect, that they are laughing at her. There is also a romance, though this isn't fully developed and I suspect there's more to come in this area in the subsequent books in the shopaholic series. Becky is a character you can't help but liking. She is endearing, but the trouble she gets herself into . . . She has a vivid imagination and tells lots of lies because she can't face up to her money troubles. It is a bit frustrating, but you can understand where she's coming from at the same time. Amazing! - Rated This is the first shopaholic book I have read and, after several indepth novels, it was such a great light relief! It is funny and relatable and just perfect for those moments when your brain isn't quite tuned in and you just need to relax! Although not completely alike- anybody who has read and loved Bridget Jones would definitley enjoy this! Brilliant!! - Rated I've read all the Shopaholic books and I think they're all absolutely brilliant. Funny, clever and touching. Well done, Sophie!! You soon get to know Becky and what makes her tick in the first book, and then you just can't wait to renew your aquaintence with her and everyone connected with her in more of her adventures. Sophie Kinsella is an extremely talented author, because with each book you are lulled into the enjoyable, nutty world of Becky, and then without warning, a new drama begins in her life and you just can't put the book down. Looking forward to reading other books by Sophie. Ending unsattisfactory - Rated I (like most of the other reviewers) read this book in a day. It's easy and funny. BUT (and it's a big BUT), it kind of loses it in the final couple of chapters. All of a sudden, our heroine becomes a t.v. star, gets her man and (apparently) even her finances are sorted - and it all just happens. If you're a shopaholic in a similar situation, don't expect solutions because all the terrible problems - the guilt, trauma and embarrassment are sorted in the end without anyone actually DOING anything. There were also a few unanswered questions - why did Tarquin dump her and how did she turn from being a slightly ignorant woman with absolutely no interest in finance into a financial expert with a regular spot on t.v.? That said, I DID enjoy it - easy, amusing and if the final chapter fails, then the author hasn't LOST anything - after all, we can't all write Wuthering Heights - but it doesn't encourage me to read any more Sophie Kinsella.

This is the first shopaholic book I have read and, after several indepth novels, it was such a great light relief! It is funny and relatable and just perfect for those moments when your brain isn't quite tuned in and you just need to relax! Although not completely alike- anybody who has read and loved Bridget Jones would definitley enjoy this!

I read all 5 Shopaholic books - one after the other. They were absolutely great! Like reading one huge book, you never had to finish for ages. You soon get to know Becky and what makes her tick in the first book, and then you just can't wait to renew your aquaintence with her and everyone connected with her in more of her adventures. Sophie Kinsella is an extremely talented author, because with each book you are lulled into the enjoyable, nutty world of Becky, and then without warning, a new drama begins in her life and you just can't put the book down. Looking forward to reading other books by Sophie.

I (like most of the other reviewers) read this book in a day. It's easy and funny.

BUT (and it's a big BUT), it kind of loses it in the final couple of chapters. All of a sudden, our heroine becomes a t.v. star, gets her man and (apparently) even her finances are sorted - and it all just happens.

If you're a shopaholic in a similar situation, don't expect solutions because all the terrible problems - the guilt, trauma and embarrassment are sorted in the end without anyone actually DOING anything.

There were also a few unanswered questions - why did Tarquin dump her and how did she turn from being a slightly ignorant woman with absolutely no interest in finance into a financial expert with a regular spot on t.v.?

That said, I DID enjoy it - easy, amusing and if the final chapter fails, then the author hasn't LOST anything - after all, we can't all write Wuthering Heights - but it doesn't encourage me to read any more Sophie Kinsella.
