Customer Reviews

Thoroughly enjoyable! - Rated 5/5
I had read the review for this in the Times, so approached with
caution. It wasn't a dissappointment. I found myself hiding away to turn the pages in peace - The author's style is very much in the great nordic tradition, with similarities to other books I have read recently, 'Out Stealing Horses', by Per Petterson (sp?) and 'Julius Winsome' which, oddly enough, was written by an American based Irish author, Gerard Donovan. The style of the writing has more polish than Michael Connolly, but the author delivers. If you are sensitive about sexual violence or want to buy this book for your Grandma, beware, as one of the main characters developement is from a position of vulnerablily. Having said that, there is no gratuitous violence per se. I was very selfishly disappointed to hear that the author's life was prematurely cut short leaving only two more of his works behind. I look forward to buying the next two when they become available in English.

The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo - Rated 5/5
It makes me want to read more of this author -

shame about the translation.

Hoping for great sales resulting in English publication of Larsson's 2 other books - Rated 4/5
Like most of the other reviewers I found this an absorbing and fascinating read, despite the fact that any book of this weight and size means it won't fit into the handbag and can only be read with it lying on a flat surface or after doing weight training to build up arm muscles!

Jokes aside, this is an intelligent thriller, with lots to engage the brain OUTSIDE the plot, connected with the world it describes.

I was amused to see that though I immediately clocked who the villain must have been purely by looking at who had most to gain, I then very quickly forgot my initial assumption - and of course, though the end of the book proved me right, the motivation was completely not what my superficial assumption had initially been.

The only reason for not going quite all the way with that final star is that delightful as Blomkvist might be as a hero, I always do feel my spirits sink a little when any hero or heroine turns out to be such a universal object of desire, not just for between the sheets, but also invariably turning out to be 'my ain true love' for all the available men/women she or he meets - it always feels a bit too 'plotty' with echoes of Mills and Boon, Hollywood, formulaic erotica etc etc

Wonderful and Awful - Rated 3/5
A curious book that has some splendid, terrifying moments, and some quite awful pages.Suspense built up over many chapters is dissipated in a moment in an almost comical confrontation with the evil genius, who becomes a preaching stereotype. Lizbeth's background is so sketchy that it's difficult to sympathise with her brutality toward people who wish her well, but at the same time, her revenge on a man who hates women is just about perfect. We found the overt commerical 'product placement' uncomfortable, and were put off by the degree of nerdy detail, even though we've both spent decades in IT -- it jarred and felt unnatural. And the unravelling of the secondary plot was far too simplistic. But all in all, we enjoyed it.

Stunning quality read, I could not put it down - Rated 5/5
I am amazed that it has taken so long for this trilogy to be translated and published in English. And only the first volume is available right now, how cruel!

I have read it in French as I can't read Swedish and I was blown away by the talent of the writer. Other reviews have already hinted at the plot(s) so I will not do so. I will say though that I read a lot and it is rare when a book is of such exquisite quality that you cannot put it down, so to have three volumes of a trilogy deliver such a powerful read is stunning.

The characters are so well developed, the multiple stories come together so masterfully, these books will take your breath away and you will have no life until you've read all three. I have done so in less than three weeks and now I am moping around and in mourning for such a talented writer who died too soon.

I agree with a previous review that the title is silly. It should be' Men Who Hate Women' to stick to the original version. Not impressed by the cover either.
