It's huge and a bit intimidating because of that but after about 50 pages I was utterly hooked. If you're a fan of The Wire you can see where a lot of the characters came from and there's a bewildering bleakness about Simon's year with the Baltimore police. Fantastic writing, great characters, and a really brilliant insight into police work and life on the streets.
Buy it.
a bit dry and harder going than I anticipated - Rated
I bought this book on the strength of The Wire.
It is undoubtedly well researched and a thorough documentary of the author's year with the homicide department. The level of access he had was extraordinary.
however, it is written in an unusual style which made it hard for me to engage with the people/characters and to keep track of some of the events. The style is very detail heavy but narrative focussed and depersonalised - so it reads as very factual account that didn't really draw me in as a novel would. Equally there was little by way of comment/analysis so it didn't engage me on an intellectual/academic level.
I read it, finished it but just didn't particularly enjoy it and would hesitate to recommend it. Having said that it is an impressive piece of work and i have never read anything like it
David Simon, Excellent author. - Rated
This was actually a present for my better half after we have watched The Wire and he has read The Corner.
This appeared to be another David Simon masterpiece, he didn't put it down until it was finished apart from a couple of times when i think he felt he needed a short interlude from some of the characters and their situation. An excellent narrative on life so far removed from our own.... or is it!!!!
Great in parts but too long - Rated
I absolutely adored the wire and, feeling bereft when i finished it, bought this book in the hope of getting another fix. Unfortunately, while really fascinating in parts, my overall feeling while reading this book was of undertaking a rather arduous slog. I suppose you could argue that that's good reflection of the work of a dedicated detective, but I still reckon it could have done with a trim. Still deffinitely worth reading mind.

What can I say about this book? Raw, real, funny and written with incredible verve and ability. David Simon set the bar high for his future work and you'll find both direct lifts and subtle references to "Homicide..." in Simon's critically acclaimed HBO series "The Wire".
