English literary and historical journey - Rated
This is a beautifully produced book which anyone will get great pleasure from simply from the quality of the photography. However any initial impression that Written In Stone is just another coffee-table book is dispelled the moment you begin to read. This is an intelligent account of the literary associations of English Heritage sites, entertainingly and often movingly written. One of the attractions of the book is that it is eminently dippable-into, being organised into quite short sections for each site. It appeals to several commonly-held passions, the love of English literature, history and countryside. Many of us find our enjoyment of places that we visit - equipped as we tend to be with a rather vague awareness of their long history - much increased by a better informed knowledge both of their political and literary past. Written In Stone will answer this need, and could well be both the companion of winter evenings, browsing and planning future expeditions, and equally a literary guide book to take with you in the car, to have a quick read when you arrive at one of the sites. It will also be educational in its own right: as this reviewer found, however knowledgeable you may be, you will inevitably discover many interesting individuals and literary associations within these pages that are new to you.
