I'd give this six stars if I could....... - Rated
This was one of the most realistic novels I have ever read about bipolar - and I should know as I suffer from it myself ! I felt I knew Tim as he spirals faster and faster into a fullblown manic episode. It's all there; the grandiose ideas and the irritability, fast talking and the belief that everyone else is in the wrong. The only small criticism is Loveday and Tim's lovemaking at the end of the book - I won't spoil it for others except to say that other people who have been in the same place as Tim will agree with me...... read the book if you think I'm being too enigmatic ! A must read for anybody who is bipolar and is interested in mental breakdown............ but it's so well written that anyone who appreciates seriously good writng will enjoy it. FABULOUS !!!!!!!
Loveable and fun character - Rated
I don't read many books but this one had me reading it at 2am. You won't regret investing in this unless you like to read books slowly. Thouroughly enjoyed it.
Rollercoaster read - Rated
This is one of the finest novels I've read in years - and from a first time novelist.
Jeremy Thomas takes you on a rollercoaster of a read as we follow the book's hero - or is he an anti-hero? - during the events in his life in the late seventies and early eighties. Love him or not, you can't help being drawn into the adventures of Tim Lomax. The characters that surround him are vividly drawn and whilst you may question his motives, you can't question the vibrancy of the life he leads.
Superbly written and highly recommended by this reader.
brilliantly entertaining! - Rated
'Taking Leave' was recommended to me. so I wisely invested in the best novel I have read in years! This was refreshingly original and the most engrossing book Ive held in a long while.I wont try to give a long winded book review, I just know that I will keep recommending it to anyone who will listen because it has left an impression on me. Mr Thomas, congratulations!
Funny, moving, emotional and ultimately redemptive - Rated
As some of the other reviews have said, Taking Leave is a real rollercoaster ride - from the exhiliration of Tim's initial success to
his increasingly adventurous business decisions, you follow a character who is always poised somewhere between achieving the amazing yet teetering on the brink of losing it all. It's a book full of energy and pizzazz, with great vignettes on the music business (X factor?!) but it's also very humane in its portrayal of someone gradually losing his grasp on reality. And I loved the cat...
