Starting Out in Draughts - Rated 5/5
The aim of Richard Pask's new book Starting Out in Draughts is, as indicated by the title, to get people started at playing draughts. Not just playing draughts of course because we have all been playing draughts since we were children. The aim is to get people started at playing draughts seriously. Yes, draughts is a serious game, not a children's game as commonly thought, and anyone wishing to play the game at a serious level would do well to buy themselves a copy of this excellent book.

Richard transports us into a magic world of tricks and treats on a draughts board. If you are not instantly hooked then draughts is not the game for you. Each new idea is copiously illustrated with diagrams and examples, usually in the form of a problem which the reader is invited to solve. Solutions to all the problems are provided.

Equipped with this knowledge you will then be ready to challenge your local draughts champion to a few games. Or to play on the Internet if you prefer. Don't expect to win straight away. The important thing is to learn from your mistakes.

Richard's book is only the first step in a lifetime's pilgrimage. If you are really serious the next thing you will need to do is to get one of the standard texts which list the various openings and give best play on each. Richard believes that these books are not appropriate as a first book on draughts. His book is intended as a prerequisite for these more advanced books. It is intended to get you started. What you do next depends on you. The ball's in your court, or as we say in the draughts world, it's your move!

John Reade. (13 April 2007)
