Fotheringham's Sporting Trivia - Rated 5/5
Having bought Schott's Miscellany, much as I liked it, I did think I wanted
more on sport. Luckily I found this one and haven't put it down since. A
superb collection of sporting trivia from around the world, from the
sublime to the truly rediculous. I didn't know camels 'could' wrestle! Nor
was I aware that Italian dictator Benito Mussolini had issued his football
team orders in the 1938 World Cup Final to 'Win or die!'. Luckily they won,
unlike our boys this year, perhaps Tony Blair needs to issue some harsh
instructions to Sven? I can't recommend this book hghly enough as it
doesn't pigeon-hole itself with just UK orientated sports, but offers
countless fascinating facts on sports all around the world. A true gem and
I am spending more time in the toilet reading it than is good for me!

Could be much better - Rated 3/5
It's a big shame that no Schott's sporting miscellany exists ... yet. This is a sad imitation, which falls short of the sort of interesting titbits of information which make Schott's books good. Some sections are too short, others go on for several pages, even though you may have no interest in them. It is difficult to pick the right trivia with sport, since so many people (ok, men) are already aware of too many statistics for it to be healthy. But, whatever the secret to picking the right trivia, Fotherington's doesn't have it.

For me, Fotherington's is also too American focussed, lacking in sufficient information about the beautiful game at home and abroad.

Why 3 stars then? For the simple reason that if you like trivia, there is no such thing as a truly bad trivia book. If you do, and you can't wait for Schott's Sporting, Gaming and Idling Miscellany, you should give this a try.
