Excellent book from master craftsman - Rated I agree with the first reviewer of this book: if you feel like starting carving, read this first. It's very easy to read, with good up to date pictures and illustrations. It will help you understand tools, good practice, and the like. Chris Pye is clearly a master at what he does; he balances his enthusiasm with the pragmatism gained from having taught (and made a living from) carving over many years. I've bought this before shelling out on tools and equipment. The only criticism I would make is that this book should not have been split into two volumes, it would have been better as a single logical reference text. These books don't cover how to carve. You'll have to buy, e.g. Chris Pye's Lettercarving book. Given this, it feels like the Guild of Master Craftsmen are milking this a bit. I also had a rye smile when Chris talked about boxed sets of tools being questionable. He now endorses a full range of tools, etc., including....boxed sets of chisels! All in all, excellent books. If you haven't held a carving tool yet, read a book on the subject before buying any tools, a fool and his money soon part. Amazon has several good books that cover carving. This book helped me understand the importance of having sharp tools and all the different types of materials that can be carved. You have to really know how to sharpen your tools properly or you will have to pay someone to do it for you. I bought two old sheffield tools that looked like they were sharpened on the concrete off the back of a moving pick-up truck. Using this book, I was able to get a real nice edge on a good quality steel. These books encouraged me to buy the best tools we could afford, so for Christmas my wife went all out for a 12 piece set from Ashley Iles and a Ray Gonzalez tool. There are alot of different manufactures that make tools and equipment you need to know what you're doing before you jump in the water.
