A brave and beautiful book - Rated
On the surface, Michael Ward's biography is a simple story of how a neglected child grew into a handsome young man who combined a talent for taking pictures with an attraction for beautiful women which resulted in his marrying five and going to bed with many more, of whom the first was his mother. Indeed, this is enough in itself. As well as being a nostalgic evocation of the swinging 60s and 70s, Ward's remarkable portraits and the anecdotes which accompany them are enough in themselves to make the book a joy. More perceptive readers, however, will appreciate the deceptive skill with which Ward's camera captures the essence of his subjects. And it takes an exceptionally insensitive soul not to recognise the emotional sub-text that underlies the book's light-hearted and self-deprecating style.

vastly overrrated book - Rated
This book was a great disappointment after reading much praise. Mainly consists of moderately interesting anecdotes and name-dropping. Doesn't really capture the fun and excitement of press photography. Has an obsession with recording the details of the death of everyone he has survived. His photography is workmanlike but no more. Much better books on this subject around.

Scrumptious...and what a page turner! - Rated
Read about this book in the papers and thought it would be really interesting. Well, so much so that I can't put it down at night! Have had a severe lack of sleep lately! It's so fascinating. A wonderful insight into one mans personal and professional journey behind the lens and quite unlike anything I have ever read. Touching and brilliant. Michael Ward leaves the reader, ie Me! gasping for more. And his photographs..! He really captures something special in everything and everyone he photographs.

This is a simply lovely book and I urge anyone contemplating buying it to take the plunge, as you will not regret it. A successful mix of family history, biography, and photography, it is written in a relaxed, gossipy style which enchants from page one. My favourite book of the year so far and already a cherished possession.

A photographer who writes beautifully - Rated
Modesty and plain English delight you from every page. A very easy read, with the pictures from a long career of circumstantial celebrity set conveniently amid text which is more like a collection of intelligent captions. Understated and roguish. If there is a whiff of Terry-Thomas, expect no apology.
