LA is not for me - Rated
This was bought as part of a 3 for 2 deal and was unsure as to whether I'd like it.
I really enjoyed the story - it was surreal, things that happened were crazy but it didn't ditract from the story.
One thing's for sure - LA life is not for me. Bring on the donuts!
this book will save your life - Rated
when i have nothing to do, I like to re-read old books of mine. And something about this book... it is my most read one. It ahs no action, no suspense, no shootings, killings etc, its just a story of a divorced man trying to "survive" while also trying to get his son's love. And yet I cant let the book down. I love it so much, and everytime I read it I like the main character a little bit more.
A jolly good read - Rated
I loved this book for the fact that I hadn't a clue what it would be like and quite soon was highly entertained by it. The cover is crap, but don't let it put you off. It's not in chapters, so evry tempting not to put it down until you finish it. Just a nice change from some of the dross that's about. It's got L.A. to a tee!
D'oh - Rated
On the back page of the book Stephen King is quoted as saying this "could become a generational touchstone, like Catch 22 or The Catcher in the Rye". It's quite a strong comparison to make but unfortunately "This Book Will Save Your Life" fails to deliver.
Much like "The Catcher in the Rye" the story quickly progresses and there is always seemingly something bizarre or strange going on. Some people may well enjoy how quirky but I personally just found it a bit to "out there" to appreciate.
The story in it's simplest form is that of a divorced, well he believes, father who lives alone in comfort with his staff to look after him. After he finds himself in an excruciating amount of pain he calls himself an ambulance and begins to wake up to the world around him and the life he leads. All the while on his re-discovery he meets an assortment of people including a thoughtful doughnut shop owner, a reclusive writer & prominently an unappreciated house wife.
Our main character, Richard Novak, finds himself experiencing a great deal in a short amount of time and learning valuable lessons from all the new people in his life and the son he begins to re-connect with. This should lead to the traditional, "happy ever after" ending but that may not be the case...
In the end though if you like your stories quirky and different you'll be in your element here. If like me you can find some thing's a bit too farfetched and tedious I'd look elsewhere.
A compulsive and entertaining read - Rated
Before you take this book home, clear your diary for two or three evenings and if you are particularly weak willed (like me), book a day off work now. You're going to need it.
A compulsive and entertaining read that you won't be able to put down. This is the story of one man's mid-life crisis/ breakdown - told with humour and affection. A magnified example of many of us in today's society, an expanding working life and compulsive money-making taking precedence over any kind of emotional life. Relationships with kids and wives are squeezed out by the Blackberry in order to make way for more money-making. How one man reclaims himself - all starting with one doughnut.
Likeable characters, people you will recognise and care about woven into an inspired storyline. Would make a great film.
