The Devil's Shield - Rated I read this book years ago when it first came out, and it is excellant. I have read about the battles that happened in and around Aachen, the first major German town that the Allies entered in WW2, and this is loosely based around fact. The major landmarks mentioned in the book do, and in some cases, still exist.If you are not familiar with this series of books they are based around an Waffen-SS unit called Wotan. This is toward the end of the war and Wotan has grown from a Battalion to a "Kampfgruppe"(battle-group),led by Col. Kuno von Dodenburg who has his oldest war hardend veterans around him, and is equipped with Tiger tanks. I have given this book four stars because there are a few technical mistakes, but unless your a "war nerd" like I am you won't pick them up. The book is not one-sided,as the "enemy" have chapters included from thier point of view, and if it is a exact reprint it will include maps so you know where the battles took place, so it is entertaining and educational. As a foot note LAH,Hitlers SS bodyguard that became a division, had some of it's elements involved in this battle, and a handful of them escaped the besiged city by wearing monks habits to slip past the Americans! I intend to buy it again, and if you are into war stories I highly recommend it.
