Ups and downs - Rated
Parts of this seemingly republished in 2005 book are hideously outdated. The places to eat section especially so. Over half the places in the guide no longer existed and some of the 'key phrases' in the back were very random whilst others such as 'bill please' were omitted. That said, the guide to the neighbourhoods and what places there are to see as well as a comprehensive history of the city is all good and well. Throughout the guide, prices for various attractions and places to eat are all misquoted and little attention should be paid to them.
Don't walk to any of the out of the way eating places in this guide as tube stations are few and far between and its most likely not there any more. Stick to the main street - Nevsky Pr.
st petersburg - lonely planet guidebook - Rated
this is one of the most comprehensive guidebooks to st petersburg around. it's up to the usual high standard of lonely planet with good maps and a wide section of russian vocabulary.
A useful companion - Rated
Lonely Planet books off vast amounts of general information (from the best expensive restaurants to the nearest laundrette) as well as some touristy guidebook gen. This particular volume was a welcome friend, with a particularly useful section on the Hermitage and a handy guide to the Russian alphabet and vocabulary. The maps are useful, although the lack of index to street names is a drawback. The author recommends particular places, but the streetnames do not always figure on the maps and it's often difficult to find them anyway. The book is extremely well written - highly informative but also tremendously witty. It really is worth reading even if one isn't going to St Pete's! This book is a must for visitors to the city.
