A Galloway Childhood - Rated
Shortly before his death John McNeillie (Ian Niall) agreed to the publication of the second edition. It was agreed between him and the publisher, GC Book Publishers of Wigtown, that as this edition would be last book that he actively participated in, it had to be something special. The original edition was illustrated by his good friend Tunnicliffe, however, on his demise the drawings were disposed of and scattered among museums and collectors. It was therefore decided that the second edition would keep to the original text but would be illustrated with photos from his (John MacNeillie) family album. To crown his more than sixty years as a journalist and author, the dust wrapper was to be a combination of the designs of two of his earlier books i.e. "The Wigtown Plougman" and "Morryharn Farm". Both of these book wrappers were designed by Robin Darwin, the great grandson of Charles. John MacNeillie was overwhelmed at seeing the new jacket as it evoked so many happy memories of his collaboration with Robin. This is a MUST for any fan of Ian Niall. It was published in a limited edition as a high quality hardback on quality paper.

A truly magical book. This book takes the reader to Galloway in the 1920`s. A world of trotting horses and show cattle of poachers and characters long since lost to urbanization. I urge you to read this book and escape.

This is an exceptional book by a gifted but little known writer, Ian Niall. It the story of his childhood in Galloway. Brought up by his Grandparents and Aunts on a farm near Wigtown, it traces a magical journey of trotting horses, poachers, cattle shows and love. The writer is able to broaden very personal experiences into a wider view on life and living which would touch the reader in any age. This is a special book, and I urge the reader who enjoys wit , wisdom and intelligent writing to read this book. You will not be disappionted.
