Written in the 14th century well after the bulk of Islamic orthodoxy was fleshed out, this sirat pays careful homage to the "party line". This means it recounts the lfe of the Prophet in a way most in line with settled views of the ulema (as opposed to the rudely candid portrait by Ibn Ishaq).
The most obvious hallmark of this; is its coy avoidance of the more controversial and scandalous matters that litter the life of Muhammad.
Volume 1 of the series is entirely concerned with the pre-Muhammadean myths of Arabia, the Ka'ba and the origins of the tribes that later played dominant roles. It begins with an evaluation of the early tribes first associated with the shrine at Mecca (such as the jorhomites) and relates their primitive creeds to that of Yemeni factions making occasional sanguinary incursions into the area. This is in aid of setting the scene for Abraha's fantastic foray into the shrine-city and the immediate context of Muhammads birth.
The remainder of the book is a collection of peurile "infancy narratives" which spins a tiresome hagiography of miracles, prophecies and of course preminitions of the treachery of the Jews.
The story is told in the form of flashbacks, where Muhammad, in the midst of battles, counsels and off the cuff conversations speaks of events of his childhood (the sense of chauvanistic self-glory is obvious).
In terms of its technical merits, the work is very clever. It neatly manages to narrate the past with reference to events in Muhammad's later life. An example of this is Heraclius's interrogation of an envoy of Muhammad who tells him of the prophet's ancestry.
Ibn Kathir's work is not the most saucy, violent or scandalous accounts of the life of Muhammad - but it is the most useful in terms of setting the context for understanding the broad totality of Islamic belief.
This edition is commendably readable and interesting.
