This book was outstanding. I recommend it to all. - Rated
One Year Off was sheer delight from beginning to end. David Cohen wrote with a refreshing candor, not pretending the year was perfect at all times. After the fact, he even debated whether decision to take three young children abroad under such often perilous conditions had been such a good idea. I think we would all agree that it was. He was a devoted father and husband and I think his family will never forget the experiences they had, though there were times when they probably wished they'd stayed home! I know what I shall give my friends for Christmas. This book should appeal to everyone.
perfect in every way but one - Rated
i immensely enjoyed this book, hoping to one day go on a round the world journey myself...the book gave me some great ideas...the one drawback, however is that i still have no idea how to afford my trip,as this author is obviously very well off...but i suppose he deserves whatever success comes to him as much as i would deserve any that comes to me!
Insufferable writing - Rated
David Cohen seems incapable of looking at the world except as a pampered, racially superior American. He is the smuggest fellow I've come across in a book since many a Jane Austen character. No deep thinker and his book reflects his shallowness. He loves his wealth though.
Wonderfully entertaining! - Rated
This is certainly not your typical travel book -- thanks heavens! This is a wonderful story of a family with 3 children who incidentally take a year to make a trip around the world! Everyone can recognize their family in the well-written book! I laughed out loud so many times and read portions out loud to my family! Now all of them are reading it as well! The real test: I bought 2 copies to ship to friends! Such wonderful entertainment!
This isn't your typical family travelogue - Rated
It's not only impressive that Cohen took his family around the world, but also that he picked some of the most challenging locales. Visiting Laos and Cambodia, driving through India and crossing the Australian desert is not exactly the average family vacation. This book should inspire any family -- or anyone at all -- to get off the beaten path, really explore and create an authentic travel experience.
