Customer Reviews

Inspirational - Rated 4/5
Eliot Coleman and his wife Barbara Damrosch are on a crusade to get gardeners harvesting from their gardens all year round.

Imagine harvesting around 30 different species from your garden in the frozen heart of winter. It's not impossible! This book really inspires you to plan the gardening year in a new way. It gives all the information you need to build cold frames, tunnels and other forms of crop protection; tells you when and what to plant to get successful yields from your veg plot even when it's under snow!

Coleman is really passionate about this subject and will convert you to his cause with his infectious enthusiasm. A very detailed book with plenty of drawings.

Some new stuff - Rated 4/5
This book is written by and for American gardeners, although it is also relevant for Europe. The theme is protected cropping and some original research has been carried out by the authors which is very interesting, they hammer home how protected cropping can be very productive, allowing harvesting even when snow has fallen.

My only gripe is that it is not really new stuff, especially for Europeans, we already know how to grow year round salad, Carrots and other hardy winter crops.

Worth every penny> - Rated 5/5
Great advice on extending the harvest season, by using inexpensive, easily constructed cold frames and tunnels. I, for one, am planning on eating vegetables fresh from my zone 5b garden, all winter this year.

Excellent - Rated 5/5
Excellent resource for extending your growing seasons.

A unique resource - Rated 5/5
This book is the only one of it's kind I have found. Not only does it have step-by-step instructions and tables on when and how to plant and harvest, it also has plans for building your own cold frames and a portable greenhouse (hoop house). Many books on the same subject focus on artificially heating a greenhouse to grow warm-weather vegetables. This one does not! The focus is instead on how to use what is naturally cold tolerant, and how to keep your plants harvestable throughout the winter.
