Provocation worth its money! - Rated
In his inimitable style Pawson sparks a good deal of controversy (on a par with his previous books "Leadership is Male" and "The Normal Christian Birth") by standing opposed to tradition pentecostal and evangelical views concerning the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The main arguments upon which the central teaching of the book hinge are - 1. That believing in Jesus and receiving the Holy Spirit are two distinct experiences, and 2. That receiving the Holy Spirit (or what is called being Baptised with the Spirit - terms which Pawson declares as synonymous throughout the New Testament) is a 'definite experience with identifiable evidences' as opposed to an unconcious experience automatic at the point of faith in Christ).
Pawson's thoroughness in approaching the subject is difficult to criticise. Broke into six segments he deals with the Old Testament's fortelling of the Spirit, how the individual Gospel writers looked on in anticipation of the Spirit's outpouring, how Acts unpacks the 'how' and 'what' of the Spirit's baptism, and how the Epistles reflect back on the same. He closes the book with a practical look at the implications of his teachings in the light of today's contemporary church.
Whether you're a die-hard evangelical or a fully persuaded pentecostal there will be plenty of stuff here to upset, but alternatively there will be more than enough to stimulate good, healthy thought. I strongly recommend this book for those wanting to stretch their traditional way of thinking about salvation and in particular the baptism of the Holy Spirit, its provocation worth its money!
