A first rate first hand account - Rated
Lydia Laube's book offers an affectionate, realistic, funny and well told account of her time nursing in Saudi. Her amusing stories of bureaucracy, conservatism about the role of women are all told without political motive: she tells it as she sees it. She's not trying to make a political point but rather to paint an entertaining picture of her experiences in Saudi; her affection for many of the Saudi people she met is evident, as is her professionalism and commitment to her patients.

Seems to me the Author just went with moment where a lot of the media is bias against anything "Non-Western".
This books seems to be to Bias, with any lack of Knowledge and understanding of Arab People, Muslim People or even Non - Caucasians !
an element of prejudice is in this book which makes it an uncanny read.
An excellent read and a real eye opener - Rated
If you are considering working in an Arab country, read this book first! I can't believe the way foreign workers are treated out there. We take the freedom of the West for granted and books like this make you thankful for such freedom.
TYPICAL STEREOTYPE PICTURE. WASTE OF MONEY TO BUY - Rated
I think if the author was allowed to go to pubs whenever she desired, her opinion would have changed.
I disagree with the covering of the book as it shows women praying to their God. I think their clothes are not any different than church nuns.
Typically stigmatised stereotyped picture about Arab culture and THIS BOOK ADDED NOTHING TO MY KNOWLEDGE.
Million of westerns worked in Saudia and most of them were happy especially about their safety and the very low crime rate. If the author didn't like the weather, next time I advise she move to Alaska. ( P.S She still won't be able to wear her bikini there ! )
Ridiculous - Rated
Somewhat dramatic - I worked in Riyadh for many years - although it is a different culture and environment it certainly isnt something threatening. If you dont want to accept the restrictions and accept the way of life/work there then stay at home!! I loved it. Literally hundreds of other Western nurses work there with no problems. Most stay for many years or leave and come back several times over the years. So it cant be that bad, can it?
