Marigold as young as ever - Rated This was my favourite book when I was very young in the early 1950's. I borrowed it time after time from the library but was never lucky enough to have my own copy. Its magic stayed with me, though, and when I finally found that it had been reprinted I bought a copy and felt the magic all over again. I desperately wanted to be Marigold then, and still do! It's a wonderful, gentle, sweet but not sickly book for children of all ages. The illustrations are beautiful too: the cat in particular is so alive! Although slightly dated, not surprisingly, they couldn't be bettered by any modern illustrator. I would heartily recommend it to read aloud, as a gift for a young reader or even - dare I say it? - for the child inside yourself. Stay within the gates! - Rated I think Jane Nissen Books should be designated a real, live Fairy Godmother, because, after treasuring from childhood my original copy of this book, I lost it and I had thought that I'd never be able to lay my hands on another. Thank goodness it's been brought back! This is the most charming, whimsical story of a little girl who goes to stay with her Fairy Godmother, who lives, as you would expect, in a marvellous house where delightful things happen. The illustrations are beautiful, and the entire book is so captivating that it stays with you forever. If you are lucky, there will always be a part of you that can slip away to Godmother's house. Even better than Milly-Molly-Mandy! - Rated This is a book which has been out of print for many years,and i am overjoyed it is available again. Unlike this authors books about Milly-Molly-Mandy,which are fun but undeniably prosaic,Marigold is quite a magical story,with the most delightful illustrations.I have never forgotten the picture of Marigold floating out of her window and over the garden in her bed,or bathing in a beautiful pool,all apparently courtesy of Godmother! When you look,you find a moral in this story,but it does not detract from the feel-good factor.Reading this again,i was shocked at how few possessions children seemed to have then(1934)and how obedient they were expected to be.Times certainly have changed,but i dont think enjoyment of this book ever will.I loved it just as much,if not more,after 35 years.
