A great introduction to the life of this most controversial character - Rated
The life and reign of King Richard III has always fascinated me. He is the most interesting of English Monarchs in so many ways, the last to die in battle, the only one whose mortal remains are missing and who does not lie in a stately crypt in a castle, palace or church, the prime suspect in one of the longest unsolved murder mysteries, the subject of Shakespeares' greatest villain and the one about whom, despite his reign of only 26 months, probably more has been written than any other. This book is a good introduction to Richard. His life and reign are both well written and the presence of visual images of documents and pictures concerning the story of Richard add to the worthiness of the book. It does however have a kind of "school book" feel to it which is fine but for greater depth and analysis of Richard's life and its impact, look to the heavier biogs. The book will appeal to the genreal reader more though and as such, is a great way to begin to find out about England's most curious, controversial and infamous king.
great for those who wish to see origianl sources - Rated
when you study any period of history older than the victorian you get the feeling that you are are dealing with little more than dust on a yellowed page. How refreshing it is to see the original documents. It really gives you the sense that you are dealing with REAL people who once lived, loved and breathed as we did. It is easy to forget this...but to see the handwriting of Richard begging his mother to write to him...suddenly it all becomes so real.... My only quibble is that the person writing the connecting notes is less than impartial. Otherwise...go get!!!!!
