Book Four in the Series - Rated 4/5
Deryn Lake is a pseudonym of a well know historical novelist. Among the books she has written are the popular John Rawlings Mysteries, Death in the Peerless Pool, Death at the Apothecaries' Hall, Death at the Devil's Tavern and others. As all her titles are preceded by the word death, this is a pretty good indication regarding the contents of the books and very good historical murder mysteries they are. `Deryn Lake' live near Hastings, in East Sussex

John Rawlings, the London apothecary is once more called in to help to solve another Georgian mystery. This time he has the task of finding a ring of French spies. A series of strange events lead him to Romney Marsh. When John finds what purports to be a scarecrow on the marsh, which ultimately turns out to be a skeleton he knows that he is on the right track but the spies are not going to give their identity away easily and desperate men do desperate things . . .

I am a fan of the John Rawlings books. The character of Rawlings is both likeable and believable and the author of the book tells us that although the character of John Rawlings is fictitious, a man of that name and profession did live in London during the period in which the books are set. For me at least this snippet of knowledge makes the books just that little bit more interesting.

Entertaining historical romp - Rated 5/5
This book follows in the footsteps of the previous titles in this series, and is perhaps the best yet. Its mixture of fact and fiction weaves a tale of spies, murder, and an unbreakable code which tantalises readers to the end. Highly recommended!
