A welcome addition - Rated
`Peace Comes to the Chalet School' is a very smart book, produced by Elinor Brent-Dyer's official publishers, Girls Gone By. Katherine Bruce has created a knowledgeable, original and extremely well researched story, demonstrating her love and respect for Brent-Dyer's work and remaining completely faithful to the ethos of the Chalet series. A good read for all those Chalet School fans who are keen to learn more about their favourite characters.
Enough is Enough - Rated
As a Chalet fan of many years standing (over 30) I for one am sick and tired of these 'authors' jumping on the bandwagon with these so called 'Chalet Books'. The Chalet School series was the totally unique creation of one amazing woman, Elinor Brent-Dyer and it is time people realised that the writing of the books died with her, and stopped borrowing her ideas in an attempt to get published and make a bit of money in the process. To all budding authors, if you can write, come up with something original of your own and stop borrowing from other people.
Technically brilliant, but lacking that extra EBD something! - Rated
As a technical exercise, Miss Bruce did exceptionally well. She kept the Chalet idiom and was accurate, but I fear that there wasn't enough incident in this book to enthrall the reader (the declaration of peace notwithstanding). It was also fascinating to see the endings she had devised for characters such as Gertrud(e) Beck(er) and Betty Wynne-Davies. I liked the Rosalie Dene and the radio bit (was it so recently that we had to wait an hour between news bulletins?) but wondered whether in times of rationing it would have been so easy for anyone to write home for a new hairbrush. The reappearance of Margia Stevens was well handled, too.
Anyway, in all it was a first rate effort which didn't quite leap off the page at one.
A fascinating fill-in title - Rated
Many thanks to the author for this exceptionally well-written fill-in title in one of my favourite series. Having been very disappointed with The Chalet Girls Grow Up I was unsure whether to purchase this book. I'm very glad I did! This book arrived Saturday morning and was finished by teatime! The explanatory Foreword and Afterword were very interesting in providing background info on both WW2 and the Chalet School. Overall, a book I think EBD herself may have approved of, the author's affection for the series shines through. Can we have another please?
