'The New Mistress at the Chalet School' is different from others in the Chalet School series in that, as the title implies, it follows a new teacher rather than the usual new pupil. As such it expands on the short snippets given in the earlier books about the staff. EBD's mistresses always had more personality than other school stories, eg the mistresses in Malory Towers, and she easily constructs an interesting story about Kathie Ferrars and her trials as a new teacher. The book takes place in the Mary-Lou era, and it's refreshing to come across someone who doesn't automatically love her.
