Excellent Walking Guide to Madeira - Rated
I bought this from amazon.co.uk and used it on a recent holiday to Madeira. We tried out three walks, not covered in any other books we've read and really enjoyed them.
Shirley's directions and descriptions of the walks are great and took us to some places we would not have otherwise discovered. She also goes into interesting detail about the local plant life, history and places of interest. An excellent guide, which we'll be using again on our next trip.
DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK! - Rated
What a little gem this book is. A good selection of walks, some not seen in other publications, with clear, concise directions and descriptions and good maps. There is extensive detail on local flora and buildings of interest.
I love the Sunflower books but Shirley's is the ideal companion and a 'must have'. I look forward to using it for the first time very soon.
Levada Walks - Rated
Having used several guides whilst exploring Madeira I have found this book to be the most up to date, accurate and comprehensive. There are walks to suit all levels of expertise and time available with precise details of how to access the routes. The walks are outlined on actual sections of ordnance survey maps which makes identification very easy. The accompanying commentaries on local history and flora are interesting and informative. The author certainly knows her stuff.
lovely walks, very pretty book - Rated
Shirley Whitehead's Madeira Walks arrived after I had returned from Madeira so I missed the new levada walks in the west of the island. Its a lovely book just the right size to be pocketable and informative for plants and history in addition to the walking.
If you are looking for a first book on Madeira suitable for casual walkers then this will open up some lovely western levada routes accessible by bus from Funchal. A couple of routes are duplicated with Walk Madeira, and other books, but as a starter for easy exploration of Madeira I would highly recommend this pocket sized guide.
If you are into more adventurous walking and gps navigation then you would opt for Walk Madeira but you should also buy this little gem.
