Over the years I have read many football books, club histories, biographies etc, but have never felt inspired enough to write a review. So this book is truly honoured.
I grew up knowing Forest as a huge club that won trophies at home and abroad every season and they had some real Cult Heroes. But what is so wonderful about this book is how author David McVay, because he knows so many of them personally, has managed to interweave the plain facts of the careers of so many of the legends from the 60, 70s and 80s with some wonderful stories of what these great players were like as men, what made them tick, what were their foibles and what motivated them to produce such dazzling performances.
And then there were all the Cult heroes I hadn't heard of before - Wally Ardron, Henry Newton, Jeff Whitefoot - each who captivated the hearts of the paying Nottingham public. From the first chapter on 1920s and 30s goalkeeper Arthur Dexter I was gripped, as tale after compelling tale unfolded on the pages in front of me. It is a great read and as a fan of football and not particularly Nottingham Forest, I would absolutely recommend this tome to everyone.
The author deserves a great deal of credit for producing new information upon the likes of Brian Clough, Stuart Pearce, Peter Taylor, John Robertson, Ian Storey-Moore, Kenny Burns et al. I enjoyed every page and if you are a Forest supporter, then this book is where you want to be, in the Premier League. A great read and an excellent addition to my top list of football must reads.
