Uppies and Downies - Rated 5/5
This book is a great delight, both for the serious historian and for the afficianado of so-called "quaint" customs, who needs to be nudged in the direction of considering their significance.
Each of Hugh Hornby's studies of up to twenty traditional football games in various parts of Britain is itself a little gem, full of precise details, guidance for further reading and well produced maps and photographs that will captivate even the illiterate, but he also brings them together as evidence for the revisionist view of sports history.
If you are only ever going to read one book on the history of sports and games - read this one!
Chris Hale March 2008.

This book is a real treat any football supporter - Rated 5/5
Uppies and Downies is a great book for anyone interested in the history of football.

I have read some of the other books in the Played in Britain series and they have always been both insightful and interesting. Uppies and Downies is no different. The book includes in-depth information through an easy to read and eye catching layout. The author certainly knows his stuff. Each of the surviving games is chronicled as well as the general history of village football. The spirit and energy of the surviving games are captured through fantastic photography.

Uppies and Downies is a great addition to the bookshelf of any sports fan. I would highly recommend it.
