As someone very new to the knitting circle, I must say that Kaffe was a name, I thought, shouldn't be reckoned with. Not so soon in my career, at least. Until I came upon this book. Not only are the instructions user friendly, but they work! With photographs of stunning patterns it is most certainly a motivating book. I'm now far passed the scarves of old and onto more daring, exciting projects. With Kaffe and his tools by my side, I'm on my way. And am in very good company.
You'll knit with Kaffe again and again - Rated
This book is stunning! It's so great to see these classic patterns back! This is a book I will use again and again. In the event the stated yarns are superceded by newer more beautiful Rowan yarns substitution will be a piece of cake as the yarn information at the back is given in great detail with everything you'd need to know for switching yarn.
I found the sheer vibrancy of the designs the perfect antidote to the proliferation of muted single colour patterns. The throws and cushions are divine and would warm up the darkest living rooms. If I get cracking now I'll have a cosy bright nook to knit in next winter!
Lovely but a multi-coloured elephant - Rated
This is certainly a beautiful book to look at and some of Kaffe's classic designs are made a bit more accessible for the faint hearted. I was somewhat disappointed, however, that the "re-working in modern yarns" meant little more than replacing the old Donnegal lambswool tweed etc. with Scottish Tweed. Presumably when Rowan discontinue it for the latest re-incarnation of the yarn, Kaffe will have to bring out another new book!
My biggest disappointment, however, was that nothing has been done to increase the range of sizes (maximum 38 inch bust in many cases). Most people with a a bit of patience can work out substitute yarns, but making a pattern bigger is another matter. This is especially surprising given that the patterns in the Rowan magazine now cater for up to size 22.
All in all, a lovely book to look at but probably a bit of a multi-coloured elephant!
