Customer Reviews

Siddharta - Rated 5/5
I've only read it once but it had such a strong impact on me and it won its way, page by page, to the very top of my 'essential books' podium. One of Hesse's great accomplishments in this story is how he relates to the reader - through the whole story I felt more and more like I was Siddharta. The story reads like a non - fiction even though it is called a fiction. I think, physically it is a fiction, but spiritually it is a very real story. Through just one read my life was changed for the better, but I'm sure that after another read, I will have a completely different review to write again. This book is a guide to a better life.

Spanish Edition - Rated 3/5
I would love to give this book 5 stars but as this edition is in Spanish I don't understand a word of it. Buyer beware

Lifes' rich pagent - Rated 5/5
Anyone who has looked at his or her reflection in a river and were momentarily startled will find this book a fascinating journey. Beautifully written, simple to interpret, prose to warm the heart and to make it weep. I commend this book as an important lesson in life from which self-comparison should be drawn.

Metaphysics CAN make you cry! - Rated 5/5
In Siddharta, Hesse manages something that the greatest metaphysicians could not: he concretizes a metaphysical system into a life lived. In other words, he presents the possibility of LIVING a metaphysical position. It's the story of one man's encounter with Being, his experiments with beings, and his eventual return to the One- represented by the Heraclitean image of a river, which always remains but is always changing, and into which you can step but once.

A simple, affecting parable of life...Spiritually enriching - Rated 5/5
Hesse's tale of a young Brahmin's son about to embark on the adventure of life is a wonderfully simple and concise story - it is a parable about the struggle of life, and has a wonderfully optimistic message.

Hesse's strengths as an author lie in the way he imbues a strong narrative with a dual meaning - one comes away with the impression of having read a good book, but at the same time with the realisation that the story was merely a framework on which Hesse has hung a touching spiritual tract.
