If New York was as close as Paris, France i would have visited by now - until then i've travelled the shops around the northeast of the UK in a 15 mile diameter of where i live and the following including this map are what i'd recommend:
Insight (This Map) FlexiMap / Spotlight on New York softback book, by Amanda Statham and Nicki Grihault 2007 / New York City, Rough Guide Directions by Martin Dunford and Ken Derry 2007 / AA Citypack guide New York 2007 written by Kate Sekules with a laminated folout map which is i'd say second best to this Insight Fleximap, but good as a travel touring map and manageable to carry and both are easy to fold and unfold and also Nick Wood's 360 degree view of New York which should include a DVD - i consider this book photowise top quality and Spotlight on New York has good smaller photos with short paragraph readings.
From a readers point of view Rough Guide Directions and the AA Citypack guide to New York and also the bigger more expensive DK eyewitness travel guide 2007 have decent material. From a reading point of view there's many books, but i've found my selected few from my selected choice my kind of books more from a photo angel, but given the additional information there's maybe enough to what i need in words.
If the day came i ever did visit New York, this Fleximap from Insight is perfect and i wouldn't fault it. It's a clever map and FlexiMap have a whole range of these maps from different places. But i have an idea, all be it an expensive idea, but an idea of where i'd stay given if i made the challenging step to take on New York. Those building are tall. Newcastle Upon Tyne is kind of medium size to New York, but i've taken Newcastle on....and won.
I don't think there's anywhere on this planet where New York offers to many people a once in a lifetime trip from a city point of view than what America's NY offers, that's how i see things folks. But to get a view from your seat Google's Map Satellite is the best map in the world. Even though it's several years outdated, it's given me an addition to the paper maps i have - but can take nothing away from having so much info. that these maps offer. Insight's map is so informative, you'll gaze at the city's places time and time again and it has a good colour co-ordinated theme layout.
Insight New York's map has well defined folded creases and is easy to use as a touring map as well. You wouldn't really want to lose a map like this esp. in New York or you'll be lost or maybe that's your idea, to explore NY even more.
I think La Gaurdia Airport would be my stop. And a stay at the Hilton or Sheritan just south of Central Park (in my dreams?) But considering the Hilton isn't unrealistic in it's prices, you'll be surprised that even though a holiday like this might cost a few grand per person for a week for a week at the Hilton and flight and a few burgers. Is this way over budget from a budget which might cost only a few hundred less elsewhere on such a holiday? Get the flight cheap and you've got it made or get a good deal at the Hilton or Sheritan off season and you've got it made. The thing i think is that, unless you have a better more indepth plan and knowledge of where you'd sooner be at and at a cheaper option, yeah, you're right, a trip to the travel agents is in order and a few travel brouchers. To take on New York from my point of view because it's not the same as your average trip as i'm not a traveller or a Michael Palin explorer, then Map's are a real value and some essential city information as well as airport, flight and enough dollars to buy me a Tommy Hilfiger beach towel or a single Gucci shirt cuff link at Fifth Avenue or an Armani shoe lace.
The books tell you to use public transport, for this maps are also a good source and widely available. You can't beat a few blocks, streets and avenues of walking and a Yellow Cab...for now Autumn In New York will be a sit in front my TV with my thoughts and the big plan.
Newcastle to Gatwick to la Guardia or JFK airport to the Hilton to Macy's to Fifth Avenue to the Lincoln Centre to Central Park to Battery Park to Times Square to the Chrysler building to the Empire state building to Wall street to do my dealings, to the NY Police Museum to the Federal Exchange to China town for my rice takeaway to look across at the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridge to the world trade centre site to Madam Tussauds to Madison Square Garden to the American Indian Museum and to see Donald Trump or at least his tower next to the Lladro Gallery & museum and back to my place for a date with Paris - Paris the travel guide.
